NIC'S TAKE

It was quite a while ago on one of the Saturdays when I had to wear Black pants, black tee and sneakers. Then changed into what made me feel like a prep school student.

Later during shopping S was contemplating this blue mini dress from Cotton On and pieced it together with black leggings and school shoes - Kawii!

Flaunting It Right

OLYMPIC FEVER episode 16

CHERRY TALKS FASHION

1. Fit fits everybody

Not many of us can get away with a tent dress because for most womanly figures, a nice fit is ALWAYS flattering. Throw out baggy and loose, they are your worst enemies. Remember, a nice fit is one that shows the curves but not something that you can't move freely in.

2. Controlled Patterns

When wearing patterns, don't go for prints that are too large in size or overload with multiple kinds of patters. Instead, choose a small singular pattern to work with.

America's costume in Ugly Betty overwhelmes her on set (left) but a single patterned dress let's her shine(right).

3. Black is Myth, Monotone is Legend

Wearing all black is the most slimming? True, but the key to a slimming look is not black but the fact that the outfit is a solid monotone colour. Go forest green or fuschia, "only black" is old wives' tale.

4. Flow and Form

Choose a piece of your outfit that has a material and cut that has form. For example, instead of a hoodie over a summer dress, go for a navy blazer. If you are wearing a flowy bohemian chiffon blouse, pair it with a pair of dark coloured tailored shorts and chic ballet flats.

* Tip: Lighter colours on top and darker colours for bottoms

Too much free flow (left) from hair to cardigen to dress. While Crystal Renn looks courtoure in a sleek hairstyle and a crop jacket.

4. Open up the Neck Area
Choose blouses that have a V-neck or scooped neckline because it elongates the neck. Use long necklaces to further enhance a more proportionate torso.

Tip: For pants/jeans, go for flared or straight cut instead of tapered.

5. Work it Out
Full figured or not, exercise and a healthy & nutritious diet is the key to a gorgeous figure. Unfortunately, there is no short cut.

6. The Right Support
Shop for the right undergarments/bras for the full-figured lady.

7. Stop Short at the Hips
Blouses or jackets should stop right at your hip bone. Too high or too low is not flattering.

8. Forget the Tagging
When has the size on the clothing ever been accurate? Move from one shop to another and your waist can shrink or expand by 2 to 3 inches! So choose the cut that fits you not the number.

The Same Yet Different

OLYMPIC FEVER episode 16

NIC'S TAKE

Wore this outfit on a casual and relaxed Sunday out (some time ago) but add a few other things and the outfit is ready for a night out to have coffee with girl pals.

Pulled on a vintage crop jacket and swapped classic pumps for a pair of gladiators.

Deep Fry!!

CHERRY'S BEAUTY REVIEW

Product on trial today is the Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleansing Oil which costs about $16+. It's a 2 in 1 cleanser that not only removes dirt but is able to clean off your make up as well. So does it work?

Here's the verdict:

Plus Point: The oil-based cleanser is gentle on the skin leaving it feeling soft after the wash.

Minus Point: While it does remove most make up, waterproof eye make up like eyeliner and mascara do get washed off but lands right under the eye. After that, the soapy liquid makes it hard to remove make up especially around the eyes.

Suggestion: If you are interested in using this product but not ready to fork out $16 over for it right away, look for their travel size bottles as a test ;)

Can be found at Guardian or Watsons.

Sudden words of Patriotism

OLYMPICS FEVER episode 16

NIC'S NOTES: sudden words of patriotism

Almost everyone is heating up with the Olympics Fever...is that why it's so hot these few days? Argh. Once again, another slim slim chance of Singapore possibly getting an Olympic medal to bring home. As the dynamic dual Lee Jia Wei and Wang Yue Gu will battle the Koreans in table tennis. Fingers crossed? We'll see...And cheers to Tao Li for clinching the 5th place in 100m butterfly stroke for swimming. Ok, so no medal but it's a huge achievement on top of breaking her own record.

Although well, it's an open secret. They are "imported from China" but if they truly love Singapore and call it home then I guess I have no qualms about them representing Singapore. Because really, it's the heart that counts right? But what makes one Singaporean?

Putting it bluntly, most Singaporeans enjoy bitching about our country and stuff but when one leaves home ground we are proud to be Singaporean after all. I guess it's like an oxy-moron of Singaporeans on top of our layers of unique culture, Singlish and memories of kopitiams (coffeeshops) that despite the fact that our ancestors originated from foreign land, there is something so Singaporean about me that I just can't run away from. Something that makes me more Singaporean than I am Chinese(China). And I believe that's what makes me Singaporean.

Pressure Points

BACK TO SCHOOL TIPS

Is school becoming a breeding ground for girls to strut and trample on each other's physical appearance? Feeling the pressure to suddenly look fashionable? Cherry Magazine shares with you some fuss free tips on looking good for school.

1. Understand it's style first, trends later.
We can't hide from the fact that certain kinds of clothing enhances your body and some just makes it worse. As the saying goes "Trends come and go but style is forever." Pick classic pieces and dress to your body type then add accessories or shoes to update your wardrobe.

A. Choosing pants: Check your own butt out! Are the positioning of the pockets flattering? Or should there be pockets at all? Single toned dark coloured jeans are said to have the most slimming effect on thighs.

B. Blouse/Tees: Take note of the type of collar and if it's most flattering for your neck making it look long and elegant. Also choose the right length that balances out the proportion between your upper torso and legs.

C. Dresses: Cute, feminine and they can be worn with heels or flats. Just be careful it's not too short! Test run it at home or in the dressing room before heading out. If they are, then pair it with leggings (can't see through) or skinny jeans.

2. Put your best face forward
No, let's not even go to the extent of foundation, eye shadow, eyeliner and lipstick. Even though looking smoking hot seems nice, but morning classes leave little time for make up. Besides, no one likes to look like they've tried too hard. For a simple make up routine, go for the model-casting look that is fresh faced and natural.

A. Cream concealer: Even out skin tone/ blemishes or cover dark eye rings. Remember to choose a colour that is most suited to your skin.

B. Blusher: Super model Giselle is never without blusher. Because it always gives that healthy glow and your skin just seems to smile :)

C. Mascara: A quick swipe of mascara will open up and brighten your eyes

D.Tinted lipbalm: Barely there colour, moisturizing and even if you apply it on with your eyes closed it still looks good ;)

*Don't forget to clean it off before you sleep!

3. Your crowning glory

Bad hair days should be avoided at all cost, how hair alone can affect one's confidence is quite amazing. Professionals agree that the basic foundation for beautiful hair is finding a good shampoo and conditioner that works for your hair.

4. Let gossip and back biting roll off your back

There's nothing more taxing than carrying around a bag of gossips about others or an anxiety of how people think of you. Not caring to be involved or affected by gossip and bitching requires lots of practice but the freedom that comes from it, amazing ;)

110 decibels

PREP CLASS episode 15

CHERRY CHECKS FASHION

Music concerts and gigs attract a myriad of music enthusiasts whose fashion styles are as loud as the music pounding through open fields. A good 110 decibels!

Top 4 looks from Glastonbury

amba's (left) long cardigan keeps her warm and also counteracts her high waisted denim shorts by giving the illusion of a longer upper torso.

anna's (right) gold quilted vest definitely gives the "trendy" vest a run for it's money. This is how she adds a spark of Anna to mainstream trends.

Tabitha Denholm from the Queens of Noize (left) has got her pink wig and faded pink denim shorts to match taking the term "getting all dolled up" quite literally.

Zoe's (right) the star with a pair of must-have star studded wellies for open field rock concerts, a leather jacket and a bag bursting with magic dust.
